Alderney Library achieves
The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2011

The following announcement comes from detail in a most welcome letter received May 2011
THE QUEEN'S AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE 2011
To THE ALDERNEY LIBRARY
Providing Library Services to the community alongside
fundraising for a permanent facility.
You will be aware that The Alderney Library was nominated for The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for volunteer groups, by Sir Norman Browse - President of the States of Alderney.
It is with great pleasure we can inform you that, on recommendation of the Minister for Civil Society in the Cabinet Office, Her Majesty the Queen has agreed to confer this unique National Honour on your group. Congratulations on this achievement and to everyone involved.
The presentation of the award was held in the Ann French Room of the Island Hall on 14th July 2011 at a Vin d’Honneur given by the States of Alderney to celebrate this achievement.

Mrs Sue Stewart, current Chairman of the Library Committee, accepted the award on behalf of all volunteers past and present from Air Marshal Peter Walker, Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey.
The Bailiff of Guernsey Sir Geoffrey Rowland also attended and he and the Lieutenant Governor visited the Library later that afternoon accompanied by the recently elected Alderney President, Stuart Trought.

The Lieutenant Governor generously offered to have the citation framed which, together with the engraved Glass crystal, will be displayed at the Library.

The group of four ladies who had been chosen to attend the Buckingham Palace Garden Party on 12th July was reduced to three when Veronica (Ronnie) Green took a bad fall at home. She was in hospital for medical treatment while Joyce Whitehead, Kate Russell & Eileen Mignot were enjoying VIP treatment at the Queen’s pleasure. On arriving at the garden gate our Alderney representatives were redirected and afforded a personal escort to the garden through the Palace itself. They were able to marvel at the many portraits & paintings through the vast corridors and meet some of the other volunteer groups while taking tea in regal surroundings. The Queen and Prince Philip hosted the event.
