History of the Mobile Library.

Early in 2000 it was anticipated that work on the Island Hall would mean that all occupants, including the Library, would have to vacate the building for approximately 18 months. Various suggestions were made for alternative accommodation, including the vicarage, empty at the time, but none proved satisfactory.

One of the Desk Assistants saw a feature on Channel T.V. about Jersey Library buying a new Mobile and suggested that perhaps their old one would meet our needs. The States Engineer went to Jersey to see it and as a result of his report the States of Alderney bought it; this was to be our temporary home - a static mobile. It came complete with over 14,000 books in excellent condition - a gift to us from the Jersey Library. These were processed and packed away ready to be used as new stock in the 'new' library. (At that time the plan was to enlarge the area within the Island Hall). The Junior Militia did all heavy work of moving boxes and boxes of books, and an excellent job they made of it too.

Because Alderney was then to have a new purpose-built library, and because work had not started on the Island Hall, it was decided to use the 'mobile library' as a base for fund raising activities. It was open every Saturday from 1.30 to 3.30p.m. from Easter until the end of September/October 2001. The library sold anything that was donated, mostly books, (of which there was a good collection), plants, including herbs, in season, jig saw puzzles. Since it opened in the Spring of 2001 it had generated £1045. The mobile library was discontinued once the new library was built.
